Learning Something New

Being an online freelance worker is not easy. Although it is much more convenient to work online in the comfort of one's home, it also brings its share of risks. Among the biggest risk that online freelance workers face is the possibility of a contract ending abruptly. This happened to me a couple of weeks ago and I've been living on the earnings that I made in my previous office-based job.

Although I have applied here and there, it appears that not much jobs are available for my skills set. I am more inclined to writing and re-writing articles. But with the cut-throat competition online, it has not been easy for me to land a job for the moment.

Due to this, I decided to go back to school . . . online. There are actually a good number of online sites that offer free but good training for people who may want to study while staying at home. These sites allow online freelance workers like me to study without having to spend that much (I do have to pay for rent, utilities and an internet connection)

These are some of the sites that I found offering free online training:

  • For those who may want to learn a new language Languages4Free is a good place to start in. The site offers a number of languages for online freelance workers who may want to work as translators or may simply want to learn a new language.
  • For online freelance workers who are not quite adept with programming, a number of sites offer free lessons in programming. The level of difficulty in the training given by these websites vary although they would definitely give people with no programming background (like me) the opportunity to learn a programming language or two. These websites include:
  • Surfing the net is fun but have you ever wondered how to create a website? Wonder no more since a w3schools.com offers free training in creating websites. This website is a godsend for online freelance workers who are looking to create their own websites to use in their portfolio or even to make some extra money on the side.
  • One particular website also attracted my attention as a former educator since it basically offers numerous topics that can be used in education. Although I stopped teaching after I decided to become an online freelance worker, it is a good website for teachers who were assigned to teach a subject that they are not quite confident of teaching. The Khan Academy is definitely one website that teachers will find useful in their line of work. Online freelance workers can also benefit from the website if they are asked to write education-related articles.
  • A search engine optimization (SEO) specialist or anyone interested in learning more about SEO will also find the SEO Primer rather helpful since it offers some answers to questions that online freelance workers may have on the topic. It also explains Keyword Research and a Guide for Long-lasting SEO Results.

These are just some of the sites that may help anyone who wishes to learn something new although there may be hundreds thousands of sites that offer free training on different topics that anyone may want to learn about. All you have to do is to Google it.
